NCLAT Temporarily Lifts CCI's 5-Year Ban on WhatsApp-Meta Data Sharing for Ads; Meta's Appeal Continues March 17.
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has temporarily lifted a five-year ban imposed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on data sharing between WhatsApp and its parent company, Meta, for advertising purposes. This decision provides relief to Meta, which had challenged the CCI's November 2024 directive. The CCI had penalized Meta Rs 213 crore for abusing its dominant position and criticized WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policy for coercing users into data sharing. The NCLAT will continue hearing Meta's appeal on March 17. Meta expressed approval of the stay and is considering its next steps.
