The incident occurred in the Laldhar Range of Lansdowne Forest Division. Although permission was granted to cut over two dozen trees for personal property development, two protected species trees were also felled. The case was registered under the Forest Conservation Act. The minister involved is a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Rishikesh and serves as the finance minister in the state government.
