Jammu and Kashmir to Slash Power Losses, Boost Metering for Better Supply; 200 Free Units Planned by Spring.
Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister announced plans to reduce power distribution losses and expedite metering to enhance electricity supply in the region. The administration, in collaboration with the Union Power Ministry, is committed to implementing these reforms. J&K spends Rs 9,500 crore annually on power purchases, and despite supplying 1,700-1,800 MW, demand exceeds supply. Efforts are underway to reduce AT&C losses from over 50% to below 20%. The Chief Minister also reiterated the promise to provide 200 free electricity units, contingent on complete metering, with implementation expected by March or April.
