CBDT Clarifies Automated Emails on Tax Demands Are Not Harassment; Urges Prompt Responses to Ensure Timely Refunds.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) clarified that emails sent to taxpayers, including start-ups, seeking clarification on outstanding tax demands before issuing refunds are not harassment. These automated emails, sent to 1.72 lakh assessees, ensure refunds are not released without addressing any outstanding demands. The CBDT emphasized that this process protects public money and is part of a faceless communication system. Start-ups are not being targeted, and the CBDT urged them to respond promptly to facilitate refund releases. The CBDT has issued nearly 14 lakh refunds, totaling over Rs. 9,000 crore, to assist taxpayers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
