The Act establishes institutional and procedural mechanisms for consumer protection by creating the Central Consumer Protection Authority with investigatory and enforcement powers, a three-tier consumer disputes redressal system (District, State and National Commissions) with specified jurisdictional limits and procedures, mandatory mediation processes, remedies including recall, refund, replacement and compensation (including product liability claims), and offences with graded penalties for false advertising, adulteration and spurious goods.
