Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power in India (Base: 2004-05 = 100) Review for the week ended 19th March, 2011 (28 Phalguna, 1932 Saka)

The WPI for the week ended 19^th March, 2011 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group declined by 0.4 percent to 187.2 (Provisional) from 188.0 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 12.98 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 19/03/2011 (over 20/03/2010) as compared to 13.53 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 12/03/2011).

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Articles' group declined by 0.5 percent to 178.7 (Provisional) from 179.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of egg (3%), condiments & spices and fish-marine (2% each) and wheat, mutton, fruits & vegetables, arhar and tea (1% each). However, the prices of ragi, urad and maize (2% each) and bajra and poultry chicken (1% each) moved up.

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group declined by 0.2 percent to 189.9 (Provisional) from 190.3 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of raw rubber (10%), soyabean and raw silk (2% each) and gingelly seed (sesamum), sunflower, mesta and raw jute (1% each). However, the prices of gaur seed (8%), groundnut seed (6%), rape & mustard seed, castor seed, copra and flowers (1% each) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.4 percent to 158.5 (Provisional) from 157.9 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of aviation turbine fuel (7), light diesel oil (3%) and naphtha, bitumen and furnace oil (1% each).

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 13.13 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 19/03/2011 (over 20/03/2010) as compared to 12.79 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 12/03/2011).

Build up inflation over the week, financial year end and over the year is given in below for some important items. Trend of rate of inflation during last six weeks is also given for some important items in Annexure II.

Wholesale Price Index movement for primary articles and fuel & power indicates diverging weekly trends and persistent elevated year on year inflation. Wholesale Price Index movements for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power for the week ended 19 March 2011 show a modest weekly decline in Primary Articles driven by falls in several food and non food items, while Fuel & Power rose week on week due to higher petroleum product prices. Both major groups continued to exhibit double digit year on year inflation rates, with detailed subgroup tables and a six week trend annexure showing heterogenous commodity level trends.
