The Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu while presenting the Railway Budget 2016-17 in Parliament today introduced a string of measures to improve the cleanliness on stations and trains. Clean my Coach service on Pan India basis is introduced, where a passenger can request cleaning of his/her coach/toilets on demand through SMS. A1 and A classes of stations are ranked based on periodic third party audit and passenger feedback. He proposed setting up of waste segregation and recycling centers at A1 stations in a phased manner. He has set a target of 30000 bio-toilets in the next financial year.

The Railway Minister has proposed to undertake awareness campaigns to improve cleanliness at select stations, station approach roads and adjacent colonies. He also said that portable bio toilets will be provided at all platforms of select stations to cater to the demand of senior citizens, persons with disabilities and women passengers. Innovative means of providing and maintaining toilets through advertisement rights, CSR sponsorship, etc to be explored.

Introduction of bio-toilets in trains to boost sanitation, with SMS coach-cleaning, station audits, and waste segregation measures. A national railway cleanliness initiative mandates installation of bio-toilets in passenger trains within the next financial year, paired with a pan-India SMS-based on-demand coach and toilet cleaning service, third-party audits and passenger-feedback ranking of A1 and A class stations, and phased establishment of waste segregation and recycling centres at top-tier stations; portable bio-toilets, awareness campaigns, and financing via advertising rights and CSR sponsorships are included to address accessibility and maintenance.
