India Boosts Coastal Shipping by Exempting Customs Duties on Bunker Fuels for Indian Vessels.
The Ministry of Shipping is implementing measures to promote coastal shipping to reduce road congestion and carbon emissions. A significant barrier has been the customs and excise duties on bunker fuels, increasing transportation costs. This was addressed by the Department of Revenue through Notification No. 31/2014, exempting such duties on bunker fuels used in Indian vessels for transporting EXIM and empty containers between Indian ports. The exemption was expanded by Notification No. 46/2015 to include vessels carrying a mix of EXIM, empty, and domestic containers. This tax incentive aims to boost Indian tonnage and develop transportation hubs.
