India Amends Rules to Permit Import of High-Value Used Medical Equipment, Excluding Critical Care, Under Specific Conditions.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has amended rules to allow the import of high-end and high-value used medical equipment, excluding critical care equipment, under specific conditions. These items, listed in Schedule III Part 'B' of the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules, 2016, require permission from the Ministry for import. Critical care equipment remains prohibited for import. The Technical Review Committee recommended this change to support smaller healthcare facilities by providing affordable medical services. Import conditions include ensuring the equipment is not obsolete, contains no hazardous materials, and has a minimum residual life of seven years.
