NRIs Permitted to Invest in National Pension System Under FEMA; Payments Via Inward Remittance or NRE/FCNR/NRO Accounts Allowed.
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can now invest in the National Pension System (NPS) under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999, as per the Reserve Bank of India's circular. This decision, made in consultation with the Government of India, allows NRIs to subscribe to the NPS through normal banking channels, provided they meet the eligibility criteria of the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Act. Subscription payments can be made via inward remittance or from NRE/FCNR/NRO accounts, with no restrictions on repatriating annuities or accumulated savings. Relevant regulations have been amended accordingly.
