Interest on capital gains accounts: prescribed rates, scheduled crediting, rounding rules and a penalty for premature withdrawal. Interest under the Capital Gains Accounts Scheme, 1988 is payable at a prescribed rate. Account-A interest is computed monthly on the lowest balance between the close of the 10th day and month-end and credited half-yearly only if Re. 1 or more, with interest rounded to the nearest five paise. Account-B interest follows prescribed rates; cumulative deposits treat interest as reinvested while non-cumulative deposits pay quarterly. Premature conversion, withdrawal or closure of account-B attracts a one per cent reduction from the rate applicable to the period held and adjustments for interest already credited are made against the depositor's account-B balance.
