Central Government Amends Excise Rules: New Rules 57JJ and 57V Introduced for Duty Credits in North East Region Areas
The Central Government, under section 37 of the Central Excise Act, 1944, has amended the Central Excise Rules, 1944, through the Central Excise (Fourteenth Amendment) Rules, 1999, effective upon publication in the Official Gazette. Two new rules, 57JJ and 57V, have been inserted. Rule 57JJ allows manufacturers in specified North East Region areas to claim credit for specified duties on inputs as if no duty exemptions were applied. Similarly, Rule 57V permits credit on specified duties for capital goods under the same conditions, ensuring manufacturers in these regions benefit from duty credits despite exemptions.
