<h1>India Restricts Import of Low-Value Computers, Requires License for CIF Below Rs 70K Under Chapter 84 Amendment.</h1> The Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce, has issued Notification No. 19 (RE-98)/97-02, dated September 9, 1998, amending Chapter 84 of the ITC (HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items for 1997-2002. Under this amendment, the import of computer systems, including personal computers with a CIF value below Rs 70,000, is classified as restricted. Such imports are permitted only against a license or in accordance with a Public Notice and can be facilitated through a Special Import Licence (SIL). This amendment is enacted under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, in the public interest.
