India Amends Import Rules: Areca Nuts Now Restricted, License Required for Import Under Foreign Trade Act, 1992.
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Commerce, has issued a notification amending the ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items for the period 1997-2002. Effective from November 29, 1999, the classification of areca nuts has been changed. Both whole and split/ground areca nuts are now classified as restricted consumer goods, meaning they cannot be imported without a license or a specific public notice. This amendment is made under the authority of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, and is intended to serve the public interest.
