of <h1>India bans import/export of hazardous wastes under Customs Act, 1962 to safeguard health and environment.</h1> The Central Government of India, under the authority of the Customs Act, 1962, has prohibited the import and export of hazardous wastes specified in Schedule-8 of the Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989. This prohibition is enforced to protect human, animal, and plant life and health, as per the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. This notification, issued on March 19, 2004, by the Under Secretary to the Government of India, was later superseded by Notification No. 31/2012-Customs (N.T.) on April 4, 2012.
