of <h1>Government Exempts Air Travel Agents from Service Tax on Commission, Effective July 1, 1997, Later Rescinded in 2012.</h1> The Central Government, exercising its powers under section 93 of the Finance Act, 1994, issued a notification exempting air travel agents from service tax on the portion of taxable service value exceeding the commission received from airlines for booking air travel. This exemption, deemed necessary in the public interest, was set to take effect on July 1, 1997. The notification, initially issued as Notification No. 22/97-S.T. on June 26, 1997, was later rescinded by Notification No. 34/2012 on June 20, 2012.
