<h1>Govt Exempts Sponge Iron & HBI Imports for Steel Plants from Extra Customs Duty Until March 1987 Under Customs Act</h1> The Central Government, under the Customs Act, 1962, has issued Notification No. 254/86-Cus dated April 17, 1986, exempting sponge iron and hot briquetted iron (HBI) imported for use in integrated steel plants from certain customs duties. Specifically, it exempts these imports from the portion of customs duty exceeding 5% ad valorem and the entire additional duty under Section 3 of the Customs Tariff Act, 1975. This exemption is applicable until March 21, 1987. Integrated steel plants are defined as facilities producing iron and steel from raw materials like iron ore, coal, and limestone.
