<h1>Government Exempts Ship Breaking Materials from Excess Duty; Reduced Rate of Rs. 500/Tonne Under Notification No. 65/89-C.E.</h1> The Central Government, under the Central Excises and Salt Act, 1944, has issued Notification No. 65/89-C.E. dated March 1, 1989, exempting certain goods and materials obtained from breaking up ships, boats, and floating structures from excess excise duty. These items, classified under headings 72.30 or 73.27 of the Central Excise Tariff Act, 1985, will be subject to a reduced duty rate of Rs. 500 per tonne. This exemption applies only if the customs duty of Rs. 615 per Light Displacement Tonnage and an additional duty of Rs. 500 per Light Displacement Tonnage have been paid on the imported structures.
