India Withdraws 2012 SEZ Power Guidelines; Reverts to 2009 Rules, Restricting Plants to Non-Processing Areas
The Government of India has withdrawn the guidelines for power generation in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) issued on March 21, 2012, effective April 1, 2015. The guidelines from February 27, 2009, are reinstated. Power plants can now only be established in the Non-Processing Areas of SEZs. Existing power plants in Processing Areas must be reclassified as Non-Processing Areas, and they will no longer receive operation and maintenance benefits. Development Commissioners are requested to submit a report on the actions taken regarding these changes.
