India US bilateral trade purchases of targeted US energy, aircraft and tech goods aim to expand imports while retaining safeguards for domestic sectors.
India agrees in a bilateral trade framework to target purchases of US energy products, aircraft and parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal totalling USD 500 billion over five years; this target incorporates existing orders and is intended to expand imports-particularly in aviation, energy and high tech-while preserving safeguards to protect farmers and domestic industry, so increased market access for US suppliers is conditional on competitiveness and safeguard triggers. The agreement notes lower reciprocal tariffs for India relative to key competitors, enhancing Indian export competitiveness in labour intensive sectors and signalling expanded bilateral trade flows subject to ongoing negotiation and clarification of protections.
