Unopposed civic ward elections and alleged nomination interference: request to cancel results in 68 wards and rerun polls
A request was made to the SEC to cancel declared results in 68 civic wards where candidates were elected unopposed and to restart the election process in those wards, on the ground that uncontested wins effectively deny electors, including first-time voters, the opportunity to exercise the franchise; if accepted, this would nullify those unopposed declarations and require fresh nominations and polling for the affected wards. A further demand sought action against the Legislative Assembly Speaker for alleged interference in the nomination process and alleged tampering with CCTV footage, including suspension and booking for poll code violations; if acted upon, this would trigger enforcement proceedings and possible disciplinary or criminal process. The ruling side stated that parties may approach court, but contended the mandate would stand.
