The victim received an automated call about a cancelled parcel and, on contacting a provided 'customer care' number, was falsely informed by callers posing as Mumbai Police officers that a package in her name contained contraband and that her Aadhaar and bank account were under suspicion. She was instructed to transfer funds as a 'security deposit' to the Reserve Bank of India and transferred about Rs 78.3 lakh. After realizing the deception, she filed a complaint, enabling police to trace the money trail, arrest the suspects, and continue investigating the wider network.
