Order stops banks from recovering loans from landslide victims, probes government refusal to waive debt
A state high court found the Union government practically failed victims of a major landslide by not exercising its power to waive loans, criticized its unwillingness despite constitutional powers and differential treatment, and initiated a PIL to address disaster management and victims' rights. The court restrained banks from pursuing recovery against affected borrowers until final disposal of the petition, impleaded 12 banks and ordered them to file affidavits stating whether they will wholly or partially waive loans or justify recovery with reference to loan terms. The matter is listed for further hearing, while the court reserved scrutiny of the legality and fairness of recovery actions.
