Election Commission to launch nationwide Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, targeting foreign illegal migrants via birthplace verification
The Election Commission is finalizing a pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and will decide rollout dates after a meeting of its three commissioners; state electoral officers were told to be ready by September 30 and to use their last SIR-published rolls as cut-off lists. Many states have already posted post-SIR rolls and completed mapping of current electors to those lists. The exercise, to be deployed ahead of several 2026 state assembly polls, is aimed primarily at removing foreign illegal migrants by verifying place of birth.
