Government proposes AVAS requirement under AIS-173 for all electrified M/N vehicles; new models Oct 1, 2026; existing Oct 1, 2027
The government has proposed a rule requiring acoustic vehicle alerting systems (AVAS) on all electric passenger and goods vehicles to improve road safety: new models must have AVAS from October 1, 2026, and existing models by October 1, 2027. The mandate covers electrified vehicles in categories M (passenger cars and buses) and N (trucks and goods vehicles) and requires compliance with audibility standards set out in AIS-173 as amended. The proposal aligns with existing AVAS requirements in jurisdictions such as the US, Japan and parts of the EU.
