Unpredictable tariffs, unilateral trade measures and power rivalry threaten global trade predictability and WTO norms
A former envoy warned that unpredictable tariff policies and unilateral measures by a major economy, together with another major power's push for economic and technological dominance and widening geopolitical rifts, are destabilising the global trading system and undermining predictability essential to trade. He criticised expanded use of tariffs under emergency or national-security powers-including on FTA partners-which may conflict with WTO rules and traditional reciprocity norms, noted the EU's contested protectionist measures like a carbon border adjustment, and flagged a pending high-stakes legal challenge in the US over presidential tariff powers now before the Supreme Court. He assessed limited influence of India in global trade and outlined its mitigation strategies.
