Government launches GST appellate forum GSTAT to speed appeals, ensure consistency, mandate digital-first hearings and e-filing portal
The government launched the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), a statutory nationwide appellate forum to hear GST appeals, intended to reduce litigation delays, ensure consistent interpretation, and improve ease of doing business. GSTAT will operate from a principal bench and multiple state benches with a mix of judicial and central/state technical members, promote plain-language, digital-first processes, virtual hearings, and specified timelines, and unveils an e-Courts portal for online filing, tracking and hearings. Staggered filing is permitted until 30 June 2026 and guidance materials are provided to facilitate transition, with the stated aim of faster dispute resolution and greater predictability for taxpayers.
