Customs raids seize dozens of suspect imported luxury vehicles amid probe into forged documents, tax evasion and money laundering
Customs preventive authorities conducted coordinated raids at about 30 locations across Kerala under 'Operation Numkhor' to locate and seize vehicles allegedly smuggled from Bhutan using forged documents. Based on intelligence that high-value second-hand cars entered India disassembled, in containers or as tourist vehicles and were used in smuggling contraband, officers identified roughly 150-200 suspect vehicles in the state and seized 36 so far. Initial probes allege widespread forged paperwork, tax/GST evasion and money-laundering. Statements of current owners, including high-net-worth and celebrity owners, will be recorded, summons issued, and vehicles may be seized and owners prosecuted if knowledge of illegal importation is established.
