National multimodal plan reviews four projects to boost rail and highway connectivity, capacity, last-mile links and socio-economic benefits
A network planning group reviewed four infrastructure projects-three rail and one highway-under the national multimodal master plan to ensure integrated connectivity, last-mile links and socio-economic benefits. Rail proposals include a 40.2 km new broad-gauge line in a border region requiring fresh land acquisition and grade separations; doubling of a 73.5 km single-track corridor to increase capacity and strategic military logistics; and addition of third/fourth lines on a 138 km busy corridor to reduce congestion and support freight, passenger, agriculture and defence movements. The highway project upgrades a two-lane stretch to a four-lane divided carriageway to improve regional access, trade and services.
