Anticipatory bail granted to cartoonist; authority limits role to constitutional questions, rejects individual timelines, probes continue in money-laundering fraud
The Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to a cartoonist accused of sharing allegedly objectionable cartoons of the head of government and members of a socio-political organization, and ruled it will limit its role in a Presidential reference to constitutional interpretation rather than deciding individual disputes over timelines for executive assent to state bills. Separately, the court dismissed challenges by a federal investigation agency and a family member seeking cancellation of bail in a 2022 beheading case. The national enforcement agency conducted searches in two cities in a money-laundering probe linked to an alleged Rs 425 crore bank loan fraud.
