Government approves former central bank governor as IMF Executive Director for three-year term, replacing early-terminated predecessor
The government approved the appointment of a former central bank governor as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund for a three-year term effective on assumption of charge, replacing the prior Executive Director whose services were terminated six months early effective April 30, 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet issued the approval on August 28, 2025. India's IMF seat is part of a four-country constituency. The appointee previously served as a vice-president at a multilateral development bank, having resigned from that post in January 2024 for family health reasons, and earlier left the central bank governorship amid a dispute with the government over dividend transfers.
