Government convenes inter-ministerial meeting to plan support for exporters after foreign government imposes 50% tariff
The finance minister convened an inter-ministerial meeting with senior officials from finance, commerce, textiles, MSMEs, chemicals and fisheries to discuss potential support measures for exporters after a foreign government imposed a steep 50% tariff on most Indian imports effective Aug 27. Labour-intensive sectors-shrimp, chemicals, textiles, leather and footwear, gems and jewellery-are identified as most vulnerable due to reduced competitiveness relative to lower-tariff competitors. The government sought feedback and pledged to explore measures to safeguard exporters' interests; exporters' representatives conveyed sectoral challenges and received assurances of government support. Export data and bilateral trade exposure were reviewed.
