Opposition slams government as U.S. reciprocal tariffs take effect, threatening labour-intensive exports and targeting H-1B visa ties
The opposition criticized the government after the United States' additional reciprocal tariffs on imports from the country took effect Aug. 27, asserting the measures will materially harm labour-intensive exports-textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, marine products and engineering-and noting related U.S. commentary targeting the H-1B visa regime. The US Department of Homeland Security's draft order applies increased levies to goods entered for consumption on or after 12:01 a.m. EDT on Aug. 27, 2025. The tariffs double prior levies to 50% for purchases of Russian crude and follow an earlier 21-day negotiation window; the government says it will protect farmers, cattle rearers and small industries despite increased external pressure.
