Pacific PM tells India US doubling tariffs to 50% strains ties and threatens labor-intensive exports like shrimp, apparel
A Pacific nation's prime minister told India's prime minister that recent U.S. tariff measures-doubling duties to 50% on goods from India, effective Aug. 27-are straining bilateral relations and will severely affect labour-intensive export sectors (shrimp, apparel, leather, gems and jewellery). The visit produced an India-Pacific country action plan to deepen defence and broader cooperation and a joint commitment to promote a regional 'Ocean of Peace' concept for multilateral consideration. The tariffs raise immediate trade-law and economic compliance issues for exporters and may prompt diplomatic, WTO or other dispute-settlement responses.
