State refuses Centre's plan to delete 802,493 NFSA ration cards, alleging improper eligibility criteria and risking millions' entitlements
A state government announced it will resist a Central proposal to delete about 802,493 ration cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), contesting the Centre's eligibility criteria (vehicle ownership, turnover, landholding) and asserting that deletions would strip entitlements of millions. The state says it has verified 1.29 crore of 1.53 crore beneficiaries and asked for six months to reconcile records. Legal issues include federal competence over beneficiary lists, procedural fairness and due process for removal, statutory entitlement to subsidised foodgrains, and data-privacy concerns arising from alleged collection of personal information during outreach. The state has publicly refused administrative implementation of the deletions.
