Nepal to Boost Electricity Exports to India by 200 MW, Total Capacity Hits 1,140 MW Under Long-Term Deal
Nepal will increase its electricity exports to India by nearly 200 MW, raising the total export capacity to approximately 1,140 MW under a long-term agreement to supply 10,000 MW over the next decade. The Central Electricity Authority of India approved the additional import of 199.70 MW to the state of Haryana, increasing its imports from Nepal from 235.5 MW to 435.5 MW. This expansion is expected to generate over NRs 80 billion in revenue for Nepal. The exports primarily occur during the rainy season when Nepal has surplus hydroelectric power. This development follows a 2024 agreement between the two countries to enhance power trade, aiming to increase Nepal's electricity exports from 450 MW in 2023 to 10,000 MW over ten years. The increased supply will commence when surplus power is available.
