Washington, Aug 1 (AP) US President Donald Trump has raised the tariff rate on US imports from Canada to 35 per cent from 25 per cent, effective Friday.
The announcement from the White House late Thursday said Canada had failed to “do more to arrest, seize, traffickers, criminals at large, and illicit drugs.” Trump earlier had threatened to impose the higher tariff on Canada if no deal was reached by Friday, his deadline for reaching trade agreements with dozens of countries.

Tariff increase on Canadian imports ordered citing inadequate cooperation on illicit drug enforcement, effective immediately under presidential proclamation. A presidential order raises the tariff rate on imports from Canada, citing Canada's failure to improve cooperation to arrest, seize and disrupt traffickers and illicit drugs, and makes the higher rate effective immediately; the announcement follows a prior warning that a higher rate would be imposed if no agreement was reached and separates Canada's measure from an updated schedule of duties for other countries with a later effective date.Press 'Enter' after typing page number.
