Bulgarian authorities seize 206kg cocaine worth 20 million euros, arrest diplomat and two others
Bulgarian border authorities seized approximately 206 kilograms of cocaine valued at 20 million euros from a Belgian-registered van attempting to cross into Turkey. The drugs were concealed in 179 sealed bags within five suitcases among personal belongings. Three individuals were arrested: a diplomat from the Democratic Republic of Congo accredited in Belgium, a Belgian citizen, and a Bulgarian driver. All face potential 20-year prison sentences if convicted on drug trafficking charges. This represents the largest cocaine seizure at Bulgaria's land border. Authorities have launched an investigation with EU partners to trace the cocaine's origins and intended recipients. Bulgaria serves as a key transit point on the Balkan drug-trafficking route, facilitating movement of heroin from Asia and cocaine from Latin America to Western Europe.
