India Combats Fake Currency: NIA Leads with New Measures and Coordination Efforts Under UAPA Amendments.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is addressing the issue of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) through coordinated efforts involving the Reserve Bank of India, Ministry of Finance, Security and Intelligence Agencies, and the Central Bureau of Investigation. A nodal group and a special FICN Coordination Group have been established to facilitate intelligence sharing. The National Investigation Agency is empowered to handle FICN cases, with a dedicated Terror Funding and Fake Currency Cell. Recent amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act classify the production or circulation of high-quality fake currency as a terrorist act. Currency printing processes are continuously upgraded as needed.
