Children must update biometrics between ages 5-7 or face deactivation of identification numbers
The Unique Identification Authority of India announced that children who obtained identification cards before age five must update their biometrics after turning seven, or face deactivation of their unique identification numbers. The authority is sending SMS reminders to registered mobile numbers for completing mandatory biometric updates. Children initially enroll with only photographs and basic information, without fingerprints or iris scans. The first mandatory update occurs between ages five and seven at no cost, but updates after age seven incur a fee of 100 rupees. Failure to complete updates may restrict access to various government programs and services including school admissions, examinations, scholarships, and direct benefit transfer schemes.
