Sophisticated smuggling networks target India's growing economy with narcotics gold luxury items worth thousands of crores
A top Customs official stated that sophisticated smuggling networks are increasingly targeting India due to its economic growth, with surge in illegal movement of narcotics, gold, liquor, cigarettes, and luxury items across borders. Recent seizures included over 80 lakh counterfeit cigarettes, psychotropic substances worth Rs 150 crore, and luxury watches valued at Rs 13 crore. A trade body report estimates India's illicit market at Rs 7,97,726 crore in 2022-23, primarily affecting FMCG, alcohol, tobacco, and textile sectors. Officials noted that high indirect taxes and regulatory gaps create cost arbitrage opportunities that fuel smuggling activities, undermining legitimate businesses and reducing government revenues.
