Railways to Boost Accessibility: 179 Escalators, 400 Lifts, Braille Stickers, Wheelchair-Friendly Coaches, and More in 2013-14 Budget.
The Railways Minister announced plans to enhance accessibility for differently-abled and elderly passengers. Proposed measures include installing 179 escalators and 400 lifts at major stations, affixing Braille stickers in coaches, and providing wheelchairs and battery-operated vehicles at more locations. Additionally, coaches will be made wheelchair-friendly. To support employment for disabled individuals, a specified number of Jan-Sadharan Ticket Booking Sevaks positions will be reserved for them, acknowledging the reduced need for PCOs due to mobile phone proliferation. These initiatives were presented as part of the Railway Budget for 2013-14.
