Banks also install ATMs with Biometric Authentication after assessing the specific needs and requirement, particularly in areas where the customers might have difficulty in using PIN based authentication. Installation of ATMs is part of the business activity of the banks and no funds are earmarked by the Government to be provided to banks for this purpose.
This was stated by the Minister of State for Finance, Shri Namo Narian Meena in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

Biometric ATM deployment: banks may install biometric-enabled ATMs to meet local needs; government does not fund installations. Banks determine ATM installation and technology choices pursuant to their assessed operational needs and business plans and may install biometric authentication where customer access or usability concerns with PIN-based systems justify it. Installation and deployment of ATMs, including biometric-enabled machines, are treated as part of the banks' commercial activities and are not funded by government; funding and deployment decisions rest with the banks after assessing local demand and commercial viability.Press 'Enter' after typing page number.
