Prime Minister's Sri Lanka Visit to Focus on Defence MoU and Bilateral Projects After BIMSTEC Summit
The Indian Prime Minister will undertake a three-day visit to Sri Lanka starting Friday, following a BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations with focus on defence cooperation, as the two nations are expected to sign their first-ever defence MoU. The leaders will review progress on their joint vision adopted three months ago and explore cooperation in energy, trade, and connectivity. Several India-assisted projects will be dedicated during the visit, including the Sampur solar energy project. The visit occurs as Sri Lanka recovers from an economic crisis during which India provided $4.5 billion in assistance. The leaders will also travel to Anuradhapura to visit the Mahabodhi temple.
