India and US Speed Up Trade Agreement Talks as New US Import Duties on Indian Goods Loom
India and the US are expediting negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with sector-specific talks starting this month. This comes as the US plans to impose an additional 27% import duty on Indian goods from April 9. Both countries aim to increase market access, reduce barriers, and deepen supply chain integration, targeting to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 from the current $191 billion. A US delegation visited recently to finalize terms of the proposed agreement. The first phase is targeted for completion by fall 2025, though negotiations may extend longer due to complexity.
