Government Clarifies No Free Electricity Plan, Promotes Rooftop Solar Scheme With Subsidies For Cost Reduction
Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister confirmed the government has no plans to provide 300 units of free electricity, despite opposition allegations that BJP failed to fulfill this election promise. Instead, domestic consumers can reduce power costs by installing rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides combined central and state subsidies of Rs 138,000 for installations up to 3 KW. These installations can generate approximately 300 units monthly. The state has allocated Rs 1,800 crore for this scheme over three years (2024-27), with 97,128 applications received and 3,124 installations completed so far.
