New 10% Import Duty on Desi Chana Starts April 1 as Waiver Expires; Production to Increase Next Year.
The government will impose a 10 percent import duty on desi chana (Bengal gram) starting April 1. Previously, duty-free imports were allowed to boost domestic supply and control prices, with the waiver set to expire on March 31, 2025. According to a finance ministry notification, the new duty will take effect immediately. Government data indicates that chana production is expected to rise to 11.5 million tonnes in 2024-25, compared to 11 million tonnes in the previous year.
