Court Approves Disposal of 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy Waste at Pithampur Facility; Report Due by June 30.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has authorized the disposal of chemical waste from the former Union Carbide factory in Bhopal at a Pithampur facility, following successful trial incinerations that showed no adverse effects. The waste, stemming from the 1984 gas leak disaster, will be safely disposed of within 72 days. Despite local opposition in Pithampur, the court was convinced by the government's assurances of safety. The government must report back by June 30. The waste, totaling 337 tons, was transported to Pithampur in January, and the disposal process was initially trialed in three phases.
