India Repatriates 642 Antiquities Since 2014, Negotiates Further Returns; New Gallery Set Up for Display and Education
The Union Minister of Culture announced in the Rajya Sabha that 642 antiquities have been repatriated to India from various countries since 2014 under the current government. Ongoing negotiations are in place with countries like Singapore, Australia, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands for further repatriations. A significant increase is noted compared to the 13 antiquities repatriated between 1955 and 2014. The Archaeological Survey of India has set up a special gallery at Purana Qila, New Delhi, to display these antiquities, which are also loaned to institutions for educational purposes. A Cultural Property Agreement with the USA was signed in 2024 to curb smuggling.
