Mitsubishi and Alt Carbon to Boost Carbon Removal in South Asia Using Enhanced Rock Weathering by 2030
Mitsubishi Corporation and Alt Carbon have partnered to enhance carbon removal efforts in South Asia using Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) technology. This process involves spreading crushed basalt rock on agricultural land, which reacts with rainwater to capture CO2 and store it in the soil, improving crop yields. The captured carbon eventually reaches the ocean, remaining stored for over 10,000 years. Alt Carbon, supported by a $500,000 prepurchase agreement from Frontier, plans to scale operations across 500,000 hectares in North East India by 2030, aiming to remove 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, with a long-term goal of 1 billion tons annually.
